04/04/2013 - Official release date for COASTER version 2.1. This version of the system will host YERC-created products generated using the MODIS Percent Surface Water (PSW) algorithm and the NASA-CASA Ecosystem Model. Due to the high spatial resolution (i.e., large size) of these datasets, COASTER output products generated from PSW and CASA datasets will be available by request only. In total, COASTER 2.1 contains 94 variables within 17 datasets, which amounts to over 860,000 data files and 12 TB of data. Datasets have daily to monthly temporal resolutions, temporal extents up to 65 years (1948-2012), spatial resolutions as fine as 500m, and spatial extents as large as the globe. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12/15/2012 - The COASTER paper was accepted for publication in the Journal of Geographic Information System (Vol.4, No.6 of JGIS, December, 2012). The paper can be found and freely downloaded at the link below or through the help and about pages. http://www.scirp.org/journal/PaperInformation.aspx?PaperID=26321 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11/09/2012 - AMSR-E and SMMR-SSMI datasets produced by the Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group (NTSG) of the University of Montana have been added to COASTER. These data are the first products from remotely sensed datasets to be hosted on COASTER. Newly available variables include metrics characterizing climatic parameters, open water fraction, soil moisture, vegetation opacity, and freeze-thaw metrics. Including these datasets, COASTER now hosts 12 datasets comprised of 71 biophysical variables. This amounts to over 860,000 daily data files and over 11 TB of data. The YERC tutorial video is complete and available through the help link (http://www.coasterdata.net/Help.aspx). Planned data additions for the coming months: (1) YERC Percent surface water products created from MODIS imagery (monthly temporal resolution, 500m spatial resolution, 2000-2011, United States and Canada). (2) NASA-CASA (Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach) modeled data products including NPP, soil moisture, forage biomass, etc. (monthly temporal resolution, 500m spatial resolution, 2000-2011, United States and Canada). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 07/31/2012 - Multiple variables from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis and NCEP/NARR datasets have been added to COASTER. These datasets represent the first expansion of COASTER beyond the United States, as well as the first time COASTER has hosted non-meteorological datasets. COASTER now contains daily data for 47 variables within 8 datasets, up to 64 years in duration, at resolutions as fine as 1km. This amounts to over 700,000 daily data files and in excess of 10 TB of data. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 06/30/2012 - Official release date for COASTER version 2.0. Additions and improvements include: (1) Now hosting 4 new datasets (TOPOMET 1 & 8 km and TOPS Alaska 1 & 8 km). (2) Switched to a job-queuing architecture that supports multiple processing servers (we are now running 2 concurrently). (3) Increased the robustness of the system through better error handling. (4) Expanded and improved the available metadata. (5) introduced numerous code changes to improve processing efficiency.
